The OJu Oba company was founded in 2000 by Mestre Letho Nascimento, out of a desire to show another side of Brazil in Europe.
Born in Olinda, the cultural and historical capital of Pernambuco, Mestre Letho Nascimento trained with various masters who are the guardians of the historical tradition of the art of Maracatu. Mestre Letho Nascimento perpetuates the traditional foundations of Maracatu while adding his own personal touch. His rich and fascinating career testifies to his dedication to the preservation and evolution of this ancestral art.
The show
With ‘Raizes’ (Roots) Maracatu Nação Oju Obá offers a vibrant show, a blend of daring arrangements and original creations. The rhythms intersect and respond to each other: Maracatu Baque virado and Baque solto, Afoxé, Côco, Candomblé, Funk, Mangue Beat, Cavalo Marinho, Samba de roda, Frevo, Caboclinho, Ciranda... Every note is an invitation to travel.
Raizes’ immerses the audience in this ever-evolving Afro-Brazilian culture and reveals the many variations of rhythms and dances, both popular and sacred. The show opens the door to a world that is festive, colourful and spellbinding.
Throughout the performance, the audience is carried away by these soulful dances and songs that resonate like distant stars. Raizes is much more than a show: it's a gateway to the infinite, a celebration of life and creativity.
