Presentation
Afro-Brazilian percussion is the heir to African, European and Amerindian percussion. Extremely rich, it covers a wide range of sounds and encompasses a wide variety of instruments. They are present in all walks of life, from the everyday, with the Blocos of Salvador de Bahia's neighbourhoods omnipresent during Carnival, to the most sacred, with the Afro-Brazilian rituals of Candomblê.
Aim of the workshops
Afro-Brazilian percussion workshops provide an opportunity to discover another world culture. Participants develop their capacity for learning and creativity. They gain personal satisfaction from completing a project as part of a group. Practising an artistic activity together promotes self-confidence and communication.
Programme
Learning focuses on technical work on instruments specific to the Afro-Brazilian style: marcaçào, caixa, repique, berimbau, timbau, xequere, and accessories (ganza, tamborim and agogos)... as well as working on songs from the traditional repertoire. The traditional rhythms of Salvador de Bahia and the Afro-Brazilian rhythms of Pernambouco (Maracatu) are studied in depth.
